1800  (1897)  A few miles above . . . is Riviere a la Folle Avoine (Wild Rice River), navigable for small Indian canoes.
1852  In 1847 multitudes of caterpillars . . . destroyed the folle avoine on Rainy Lake, but left untouched some wheat that was just coming into ear.
1890  Folle avoine was often substituted for Indian corn.
1963  Among the lakes noted for wild rice was Rice Lake, known in the French period as Folle Avoine (wild oats), the two plants being quite similar.
